My Review:
This was one of those books I bought on a whim... I was at the book exchange and I had some credit that I needed to use up before I lost it. I have heard so many good things about Kelley Armstrong so I just added it to my ever increasing TBR pile. While browsing some blogs that night I saw a great review on The Geeky Bloggers Book Blog.Yay... A good reference.. So I added it to my Book of the Month Poll for June. Then Niki @ The Obsessive Bookseller totally convinced me I needed to read this book soon.... And it won book of the month.... See it was all meant to be! I was shocked when I got to the end of the book about discovered that this was Kelley's first novel.. wow really??? It was so well written, if I didn't read it for myself at the end of the book I'm not sure I would have believed it.

This book is amazing. It is filled with love, friendship, heartbreak, adventure and fun! If you love werewolf books... this one is for you! As far as I can tell all the books in this series can be read as stand alone novels.

Characters & Storyline: 4/5
Kelly creates well rounded and interesting characters.

Elena -  Elena is an outcast trying to fit into the human world.  I like love her to bits. What I loved most about her is that she is not perfect! She is strong, broody and unpredictable. She is not an anti-heroine but she has so many flaws and resists what she thinks doesn't work for her around every bend. She grows throughout the story and I was throwing a party when she realised what she needed to realise without compromising herself - if that makes any sense without giving away any spoilers. There were times when I wanted to smack her over the head when it came to Clay but the journey was worth it.

Clay - Clay Clay Clay... Clay is awesome! He is who he is and he feels how he feels and that's it! He is one of those characters that just made the story for me. By the end of it he became my favourite character. He is so devoted to Elena and such a wild card. If I haven't convinced you to read this book... read it to meet Clay.

Jeremy, Nick, Antonia, Logan, Peter - (The Pack) - What a beautiful bunch of characters. They each add their own flavours to the story. I would have liked to get to know Logan a bit better but alas his role in the story is one that drove the plot further.

Plot, Pace, Writing style: 4/5
There is no doubt Kelley writes well and is brilliant at world building.  I enjoyed the history Kelley includes of this story. Her plot was exciting and she tugs at your heart strings with heartbreaking and tender moments. The pace was a little bit slow at some places but Kelley used this to fill us in with some of Elena's past.

The ending was perfect. I love it. The only sad part to me is that there is no Clay and Elena in the next book. Or not from what I can tell in the blurb of book 2.

Cover talk: 3/5
The cover is OK. It was the colour and the font that drew me to the book in the first place.

Final Thoughts:
This was an awesome read and I will definitely be looking into reading the rest of this series.

Favourite Quotes
'You know, I couldn't imagine living somewhere without seasons.'

'Real seasons, I mean.I couldn't live without spring. Days like today are worth every snowstorm and slush puddle. By March, it seems like winter will never end. All that snow and ice that seemed so wonderful in December is driving you crazy. But you know spring is coming. Every year, you wait for that first warm day, then the next and the next, each better than the last. You can't help but be happy. You forget winter and get the chance to start over. Fresh possibilities.'
'A fresh start.'

Author Bio:
Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

  1. I've heard many great things about Kelley Armstrong too! The book sounds great and I just love when books can be read as stand alones even if they are part of a series. Will add this book to Goodreads. Thanks for the review, Chené!

    1. Me too that is why I had to try out one of her books :) Well I was apparently incorrect, Elena & Clay do make another appearance. oh well.. still an awesome series! Hope you get to check it out.

  2. Yay!! I'm glad you liked it! Ironically, I think Clay was actually my LEAST favorite character, but I definitely didn't dislike him. The person I like most (besides Elena) was probably Jeremy – I'm most looking forward to learning more about him in the second book. I'm actually 200 pages into the next one now, and I think it does need the first book to back it. From the third book on, however, it follows other characters and I think those are the ones that can be stand-alones. I will know for sure before long though because I am loving everything about these books so far and plan to devour them all. I have to thank you for letting me invite myself to read along because I definitely wouldn't have picked this up for a long time otherwise, and that would've been a shame! I look forward to the next book of the month. :-)

    1. Ha ha really? I loved Clay because he was just so raw and real :) Jeremy was an awesome character. Now that I am past all my commitments for reading I want to make an effort to finish up some series that I started. Ha ha I think we can try do a few more read-a-longs if you up for it!! Maybe you can choose books for my next BOTM poll based on some of my shelves from goodreads or something!

  3. Oh I'm quite late in this series, but I really enjoyed it so I'm glad you had a good time with book 1. It's always difficult for me to change the main characters so I'm at book 6? maybe? or 7? Because it's about Jaime and I'm not that much fond of her. But I should try, I'l usually surprised. Hope you'll like the others as well.

    1. Really... I want to try and read them all :) I am definitely keeping an eye out for this series at the bookshops now :) I haven't read a series where the main characters change in each book so this is a first for me!

  4. Kelly Armstrong is on my list of authors I haven't read at all but really want to. I'm ready to fall in love with Clay that's for sure. Great review!

    1. Yay Yay Yay yay!!! Go meet Clay :) let me know what you think when you do!

  5. Awesome review! So glad you liked it. And yes Clay is awesome. I love him so much.

But the second book is still about Elena and Clay. It's also a really good book! The third book, whoever, isn't about Elena. But I haven't read it so I don't know if she or any of the other wolves will be in it...

    1. Thanks Stephanie :) I am so happy to know there will be more Clay & Elena <3

  6. I think I read this book a long time ago but I need to read it again just to be sure. The TV show is on Netflix and I debating watching it before I read the books, since the show only has one season and there are like a zillion books in the series.

Awesome review, you've entered a whole new world with this series :)

    1. I wish we had netflix here!!! Yes yes yes re-read so I can see your review *tee hee* Kelley is an awesome author :)

  7. Yay! So glad you loved this, Chanzie! Isn't Clay just wonderful? *swoons* Now you have to read Beginnings. It's in the Tales of the Otherworld collection, and it's about how Clay and Elena met. It's my favorite in the entire series ;) Great review!

    1. *Sigh* yes he is. I love that he is not perfect and just loves Elena after all she has done and been through. I will be looking up Beginnings... Thanks for the visit Jessica :)

  8. Kelly Armstrong has been on my radar to read her books for a while. I can't wait to meet Clay, lol. I'm glad you enjoyed this book! :)

    Jennifer @ Donnie Darko Girl

    1. You need to try her out sometime :) fair enough this was a random pick up at the bookstore and I probably would not have to it sooner. Clay is awesome though <3
