Guest Post & Giveaway ~ Terra Harmony (Author of The Akasha Saga & The Painted Maiden Trilogy)

Please Welcome the lovely Terra Harmony!
I was quite excited when Terra accepted my request for a guest post after I won a set of her awesome Audio Books for the Akasha Saga. Terra's book Water was my very first NetGalley Approval when I started blogging!

Dream Cast and Top 5 Writing Tips Post
by Terra Harmony

First, a big thank you to Chene for having me on her blog!
I am the author of the Akasha Series, a set of four eco-fantasy novels ('Water''Air', 'Fire', and 'Earth'  for mature readers only). I also have the first book out in my Painted Maidens Trilogy, called 'The Rising' (a young adult mermaid novel).

Make sure to enter to win a full set of the Akasha Series audio books.

Although being an author takes a back seat to everything else in my life (mother of three, working full time, avid neighborhood volunteer, and a husband that is often deployed), I will never be too busy to write, for two reasons: 1 – because I love writing and 2 - because my writing time occurs both early in the morning before anyone else in the house is awake and late at night after everyone else goes to sleep.

When Chene asked me to talk about my five top writing tips, this was the first on my mind:

#1: Set aside time to write every day – and do it!  This does not include any other author-related tasks (i.e. marketing, covers, editing, etc.). You need to actually sit down to write, no matter how many books you do or don't have under your belt. I only work on my other author-related tasks (like this post) outside of my writing time when my schedule allows.

#2: Don't be afraid to work multiple projects. Very often, while plugging along in a good story, I'll come against a writing block. I don't hang out long, searching for ways around it. Instead, I'll get to work on another story that suddenly inspires me. The important thing is to keep writing!

#3: If you are up against a serious writer's block, think through it during mundane tasks. I think this is a secret route to accessing the creative part of your brain. I go for a walk, take a shower, mow the lawn, shave – pick a routine that doesn't require much concentration, and focus on the problems in your book while you do.

#4: Always be on the lookout for good feedback. It is out there, I promise. I also promise that once you find one avenue; a great critique group, an awesome beta reader, etc. – you will eventually lose them. Or your next story may just not be their thing. Also be prepared to giveaway your book multiple times in order to seek constructive reviews.

#5: Set aside time to write every day – and do it! Okay, now I am beginning to repeat myself, but for good reason. Write, write, write!

Terra's Dream Cast for the Akasha Series

Okay, now for the fun stuff.  The dream cast of the Akasha Series!

Kaitlyn (Main Character)
– Not a cookie-cutter character; she is independent, sarcastic, and determined. But she has her faults – and I think this is what the readers ultimately fall in love with. I guess I imagine Emma Stone (Superbad, Zombieland, etc.).

Micah (Protagonist, Male Lead) – Micah has dark brown hair, and maybe a bit of a darker complexion, but has riveting green eyes that have to totally stand out. He is also scruffy, has a 'blue-collar' worker vibe and look. I imagine Colin Farrell for this role. Not sure if he has green eyes, but that is something contacts could correct, right?

Shawn (Antagonist) – In my story, Shawn has blondish hair and bright blue eyes. He has a bit of a boyish, playful look to him. All of this makes for a very disarming bad guy. I'm thinking David Lyon from Revolution.

Cato (Supporting male character) –
Okay, this character may be a little cookie cutter-ish. He is the old, fatherly figure (in fact he adopted Micah and Shawn). Dull blue eyes, white scraggly hair – always knows just what to say. Very Morgan Freeman-like. Possibly David Carradine (Bill, as in Kill Bill).

Side note– Googling David to make sure I got the name right led me to realize he died in 2009. Soooo….he's out.

I definitely agree with the tip about working through writer's block by doing mundane tasks. I usually figure stuff out while in the shower.
