Book Review: Murder on the first day of Christmas by Billie Thomas

Publisher: Annie Acorn
Publication Date: 17 December 2012
Genre: Mystery
Source: NetGalley / Publisher (In exchange for an honest Review)

Goodreads Synopsis:

Finding a severed hand at a client’s house might throw lesser decorators off their games. But Chloe Carstairs and her mother, Amanda, won’t let a little thing like murder keep them from decking the halls. With a body under the partridge’s pear tree and a dead Santa in a sleigh, they have to crack the case before the killer strikes again - this time much too close to home.

Filled with laugh-out-loud humor, romance and a delightfully difficult mother-daughter relationship, this new series from Billie Thomas offers a fast-paced caper as these two southern ladies try to keep their very merry Christmas from turning into the Noel from hell.

My Review:
This book is not exactly what I expected. For a comedy novel, I did not find it very humorous, although half way into the book I picked up the humor a little bit easier and I did have a few giggles. Unfortunately this book was a like a hit and miss. I didn't connect with Chloe that well and I got a little bit bored. There were quite a few editing errors, but nothing that took away from the story.

Characters: 3/5
Chloe -  Chloe is smart and witty. She is one of 2 characters that bring humor to the story. I did enjoy her character but didn't feel a huge connection. I am glad she wasn't all love-sick, even if part of the story was that she was dealing with a separation from Jacob. Chloe is a strong character that holds her own ground.

Amanda - Chloe's mom. I liked this character. She was probably my favourite character in the story. She sees more than she lets on and knows better than to get involved with gossip, but also uses it to her advantage during the investigations.  She has a good dry sense of humour.

Detective McGowan - I wish Chloe could recognise what a catch Detective M is. He likes Chloe, even when she is a suspect and getting into trouble. They would make such a cute couple. He is a nice character addition in the story, my second favourite to Amanda.

Plot, Pace, Writing style & world building: 2.5/5
I really enjoyed the Christmas atmosphere that was created. Although I found the plot a little bit boring, there were one or two twists that made in an interesting read. The pace was moderate, maybe a little slow at times. The writing style was easy but didn't keep my attention all the time.

Cover talk 4/5
I loved this cover. This is probably what made me chose the book, coupled with wanting to read a good comedy - based on the blurb.

My Rating:

Favourite Quotes

If there are two words I loathe hearing together, it's "you" and "Southerners." Ranks right up there with sneeze guard and sanitary napkin. And it's usually followed by pithy observations like "I can't believe you Southerners have paved roads" or "I didn't know you Southerners had access to dental care." But at least now I had reason for my ambivalence - the man was a Yankee.

~
Funny the way people get their senses all mixed up. My friend Jeanette Ernhardt does the same thing. Always afraid her car is burning oil, she'll turn down the radio, sniff and ask, "Do you smell that?"

Tour stop - The Wolf of Descarta by Daniel Pike ~ Spotlight

Author: Daniel Pike
Release Date: November 21, 2013
Series: The Dream Box
Publisher: The Zharmae Publishing Press (Zharmae.com)

GoodReads

Book Description
Jaren Reese is just another red collar, trapped at the bottom of Descarta’s genetic caste system. But in the Dream Box he can forge a new digital identity for himself. In the Dream box, he is Balmus the Wolf Knight.

Balmus has long since carried a torch for the linker Petra but he doesn’t know her, not really. Outside of the Dream Box she is nothing more than a fantasy, a dream that is out of his reach. But Brea is the real thing. A living and breathing person outside of the Dream Box and Jaren needs to decide if he is willing to give up his fantasy for reality.

But when the Dream Box that Jaren depends on crashes due to the evolution of a hostile A.I. life form, a secret military branch commissions a team of gamers and hackers to go back into the corrupted Dream Box to eliminate the threat and Jaren is given the chance of a lifetime, though it comes at a price and Jaren now needs to decide just how much he’s willing to loose because the war about to be waged will be one on two fronts- the corporeal and the virtual.

~ Excerpts ~

EXCERPT 1:
Balmus shut his eyes to the sparks.

The mace sang against his helm and rung in his ears. His visor crumpled under the stroke. It was now a jagged line of light hovering over the bridge of his nose, blocking his vision. Balmus cursed as he centered his shield.

What did you expect? he chided. The Jackal Knight, the Crimson Hind, the Grim One, and the Leech... They were worthy opponents, every one. But this is the Lion Knight, the Paragon. He reads the language of the angels...

The crowd that had gathered here for the tournament of champions roared as another impact spun his shield, stirring his heels together. He staggered for the shelter of the boundary marker. Circling back, he swung his ax across his body in a wide, desperate arc.

A dull clamor of steel, a swell of silence, and then all was lost to the thunder of a thousand voices. A smile tugged at the corners of The Wolf Knight’s mouth. At least that shot had connected.

Just a little farther now, and this bastard has to grant quarter...

EXCERPT 2:

"You don't want to end up like them, do you?" It used more inflection now, knelt beside his desk. In a moment it would squeeze his hand with a bit too much pressure and tell him everything was going to be all right. He shivered. Reese could see the contours of the Simbot's face carved out of the dim lighting now, the stark, angular features of a woman in her mid-twenties. Her perfect mouth smiled a bit too widely. Her eyes—its eyes, he corrected—were a cold blue, rimmed with a steady glow of ambiance to appear more human. Its gaze washed over him as if it could probe his thoughts. And in a moment, it would.

EXCERPT 3:

But as she followed in his wake, she could not help but wonder if Reese had left a part of his soul in the other realm, the shining place she too had glimpsed so fleetingly. Had the man she loved and craved gone into the blue ether to never descend, replaced by a phantom that bore his likeness but none of his fire?

Reese beckoned her through a hollow. A metal door stood on the other side, its smooth surface in stark contrast to the raw earth that surrounded them. There was a keypad, and Reese punched in a code. Somewhere within a mechanism released, allowing the door to swivel along its track.

A great cavern loomed within, the dome of its ceiling continuously lit by electrical currents cascading down thick tendrils of wiring. The wires coiled at the hub of the room, connected there to a homemade sleep chamber, the largest and most sophisticated Kara had ever seen. The pod was an opaque material rather than bubble glass, save for a square near the top, where it was crowned with a Dream Box linkup. Scientists in white and green coats made their rounds about the massive apparatus. There were fluorescents on the walls as well, but their light was hardly distinguishable from the electric mist.

“R-reese,” she sputtered

Topic of Light: Lights in the darkness

Hello all you beautiful people

I am so sorry that I have not been posting any Topics of light lately. I was going through some stuff and needed some inspiration to make sure that I was spreading the same beauty with you. I was not 100% sure if my segment on The Four Agreements was successful, but I am quite excited to be launching a new segment soon also based on a Toltec book but Don Miguel Ruiz.

Over the past few months I have met some amazing people and made some great friends. Some have inspired me to read outside my genre and try new books, while others have inspired my writing side to blossom and bloom into actually writing my novel. This got me thinking of light in the darkness, hope and all things inspiring.

This is what inspired this post. Just like I hope to pour some light into your day with my quotes of the day, I have discovered many inspiration quotes and posts that have inspired me. A beautiful saying I always remember is: A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. Sometimes we don't even realise we are sitting in the dark when a little light comes along and lights our space.

Hope is what keeps me going, no matter what is going on in my life. Hope inspires me and helps me keep on moving and trying - it is my light in the darkness. Sometimes when it feels like you cannot move forward, just hold on. Change is just around the corner, like the saying goes: It is always darkest before the dawn. My beautiful family and friends, encourage and support me to reach for my dreams and also help keep the hope alive. I just want to say thank you to each and everyone of them and you for reading my posts.

What is your light in the darkness? Have you ever been in a place where you didn't even know you needed light til something or someone beautiful came along and made a difference?

My wish for you this week is to find that light that keeps you going.

Book Review, Character Interview & Giveaway: Dangerous Depths (The Sea Monster Memoirs #2) by KarenAmanda Hooper

Series: The Sea Monster Memoirs #2
Publisher: Starry Sky Publishing
Publication Date: 20th November 2013
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy
Source/Host: Enticing Journey Book Promotions (In exchange for an honest Review)

See my review of Tangled Tides here

Buy: Amazon l Amazon CA l Amazon UK

Goodreads Synopsis:
Hell hath no fury like a selkie separated from his true love.

The gate to the sea creature realm is finally open. Yara wants to bask in the glow of her budding relationship with Treygan and explore Medusa’s world, but as the new leader of Rathe her powers are needed to save a sea creature she’s never met.

Rownan assumes the worst is behind him when he returns home to be reunited with his wife, Vienna, only to discover she’s gone. She traveled to the evil realm of Harte to find another gateway to Earth and was never heard from again. Rownan claimed he would go through hell to be with her, and now he must prove it.

Rownan, Yara, and Treygan will put their lives and souls at risk by traveling to the most dangerous realm of all. Love is supposed to conquer all, but no one has ever conquered Harte.

My Review:
After I had finished Tangled Tides, I was so sad because I wasn't sure when the next book in this amazing series would be out. I was absolutely thrilled when Karen actually visited my first review, so I emailed her asking how I could be involved with the promoting of her second book Dangerous depths. Karen kindly directed me in the direction of Enticing Journey Book Promotions and I was just in time to sign up for DD! I was extremely excited about this book and it did no disappoint. Karen captured the captivating essence she created in Tangled Tides and drew me back into the Seam Monster Memoirs world quickly.

Once again I love the fact that the names are included in the chapter headings, as the POV changes throughout the story. It makes following the story so much easier. This time around we lived the story through Yara, Rownan and Nixie.

Three words: Exciting, captivating,  suspenseful

Characters: 5/5
Karen definitely creates well rounded and lovable characters. I connected with every character easily, and I was drawn into their story quickly.

Yara - Yara has definitely grown as a character and is tested on so many levels throughout the book. I did miss Treygan's POV, but luckily we do get a good dose through Yara. I definitely grew to love Yara even more in this book.

Treygan - Although there wasn't a POV for Treygan, he does play a huge part in the story. I was so happy to see Treygan's happy and lovable side. His love for Yara is beautiful and strong. Rownan is lucky to have a loyal brother like him. Hopefully Treygan's POV will come back in Book 3.

Rownan - I was so happy to see a different side of Rownan in this book. A wonderful husband that would go to hell and back for the woman he loves - literally. I can only admire his persistence and devotion to Vienna. Karen really does have you rooting for a happy ending all round throughout the book - but you are never sure what will happen next!

Nixie - Nixie was my favourite character in the book. I also want a siren like Nixie! I loved her and was so excited every time her POV came round. Loyal, loving and a beautiful soul filled with light, adding in a little spice and fire. My heart ached for her and all I wanted to do was climb into the book and comfort or help her. She was so brave and I really hope to see more of her one way or another in the next book.

Jenna & Keeley - I had to add these two brave little sprites into my review. They proved that its not size that matter, but what is in your heart and soul. I adored these 2 beautiful characters.

Plot, Pace, Writing style, World Building: 4/5
Karen has a beautiful writing style that draws you into her world. The pace is a little bit slower in the first 3rd of the book but it was not uneventful. The plot keeps you guess and glued to the book. The world building is awesome and is painted beautifully.

Cover talk 5/5: I love the first cover, I loved this cover and I'm pretty sure I will love the next cover. I am so contacting her cover designer when I need a cover for my book! The cover of the first book drew me to the story and the second cover did not disappoint.

Author note: Karen is amazing and so friendly. She has always made time to reply to my emails or  tweets. She makes times for her fans and readers, and that is a beautiful quality. Thank you Karen for writing this amazing series.

Favourite Quotes

"It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Harriet Stowe. Never give up, for that is the place and time that the tide will turn."

"Love isn't responsible. Love can make you the strongest you've ever been, or it can shatter you into useless pieces."

~ Character Interview: Getting to know Yara ~

Hi Yara, Thanks for meeting with me today.
My pleasure. It's nice to be back here in Earth's realm. I had never been to Port Elizabeth, and from what I've seen so far it's beautiful. I'm so glad you invited me.

What is you motto in life?
"Love until it kills you." My good friend Koraline taught me that, and it's the best advice I've ever received.

Do you believe in love at first sight? Yes, I do, but I also think you need to take time to get to know that person to make sure your senses were correct about them.

What is your most treasured possession? The agape pearl that Treygan gave me, and the wings I inherited from my mother. But I'm not sure if wings can be classified as a possession. Still, I treasure them and it helps me feel connected to her.

What Talent/Power would you most like to have? Ha! I have way too many powers as it is, so I'll pass on asking for any more.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? I guess I'd like to be less stubborn. Sometimes my stubbornness is beneficial, but other times it rubs people the wrong way and/or gets me in trouble.

What is your guilty pleasure? Treygan. lol. A predictable answer but it's the truth. I only feel guilty when I'm skipping out on obligations or responsibilities so I can spend time with him, but sometimes I can't help it. There aren't enough hours in the day to spend as much alone time with him as I'd like.

What makes you tick? Apparently it's my need to help others. I didn't realize that until recently, but when someone(s) I care about is/are at risk or in danger, I'll do pretty much anything to help them.

Describe your perfect date? Again, predictable answer, but any date with Treygan is usually perfect. He has a way of always surprising me with his thoughtfulness and he has taken me to some incredible places. But even our dates when we just sit on his roof and watch the sun set are perfect because I'm with him.

Thank you for your time Yara.
Thank you, Chené! If you're not busy I'd love for us to hang out. Maybe you could show me around your town? I'd love to find some souvenirs to take back home.

Catching Fire - Midnight Premier

Date: 20/21 November 2013
Place: Nu Metro @ Walmer Park Shopping Centre,Port Elizabeth
Time: 11:30pm - 2:30am

Wow what an awesome experience. It all started when I heard that there were free tickets to the new movie being released, Catching Fire - (The Hunger Games 2) on Algoa FM. Little did I know and clearly I missed the part where they mentioned it was for the midnight premier!

The entire day I was excited and nervous. My friend Christell (aka partner in crime and adventures) joined me yet again for an unusual event we had never been to before. Prepping for the middle of the night movie, I stocked us up with a monster energy drink each, just to make sure we would stay awake through the movie! Alas there was no need as the movie was action packed enough to keep our attention and us at the edge of our seats!

Arriving at Walmer Park at 11:30pm, I was pleasantly suprised to see vibey staff and even a Dj playing some upbeat tunes welcoming us. Christell and I got some popcorn and headed to the theater. (I mean who goes to movies and doesn't have popcorn? even a kiddies combo?) There was a bigger turn out of people that I expected. I thought who would go to a midnight premier, if they didn't win tickets like I did? Well there were easliy between 30 - 50 people there! All sleep deprived yet dedicated.

The movie started promptly and went straight into the movie, which we were grateful for as who knew what time we would of walked out of there had there been more. The movie had me in tears atleast twice.

Characters:
The directors did a wonderful job with the movie and the casting!

Katniss: Just like the first movie = awesome. Jennifer Lawrence is amazing and I think she is the perfect leading lady. Beautiful and brains.

Peeta: I love Peeta to pieces. Josh Hutcherson plays the role so well. Good looking and considerate. I had a collegue who read the book first and didn't agree with this casting. I really look forward to his performance in Mocking Jay as that book is intense and test Josh's acting skills to the limit.

Finnick - Yum yum and awesome choice. Sam Claflin brought a whole bunch to this character.
Mags - Lynne Cohen did a brilliant job, My heart ached seeing her and the role she played in this film. It's one thing to act with words, but to act without and touch the audiences heart is something else.

Nuts and bolts - (Beetee & Wiress) I loved these characters!

Johanna - What a bad-ass yet awesome character. Jen Malone brought this character to life brilliantly.

Haymitch - reading the books helped me appreciate him more as a character. I think you miss out on a lot without the book background, like I did with the first movie. This time round was much better and Woody Harrelson did a wonderful job.

President Snow - What a brilliant 'bad guy'.

Plutarch - Brilliantly played Philip Hofman - Cool, Calm & Collected. I thought there were one or two parts that were important that they left out.

Effie - I think the movie didn't portray what an amazing character this really is. CF did her a little bit more justice as you see what a beautiful heart she has.

Scenes I loved:
- I loved the wedding dress / mockingjay dress scene with Caeser. I won't say anymore as I don't want to spoil this for you!

- I laughed all the way through the first scene with Johanna, Peeta, Katniss & Haymitch in the elevator! One word = Awkward!

~

The Ending: I was a bit disappointed at the closing scene. Maybe it is because I read the books that I expected more. This would be my only critique of the movie, otherwise I thought they did a great job of bringing this book to the big screen.

We left at about 2:20-ish. This was a wonderful adventure. I can't say I will be doing the midnight premier again but atleast I can say, been there, seen it and ate the popcorn!

 ~

What did you think of this movie? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Book Review (ARC) Keep You From Harm by Debra Doxer

Series: Remedy Volume 1
Publication Date: 25 September 2013
Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy, Young Adult
Source: AToMR Tours (In exchange for an honest Review)

Goodreads Synopsis:
They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.

There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.

Then I meet Lucas…

His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.

But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I could never have imagined.

My Review:
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. I'd seen it on a few blogs and when I was offered it for review from AToMR as an advanced review; I figured I'd scoop up the opportunity. I really like this book. I think it falls more into the Young Adult Category, which isn't my normal genre - but for a book in this genre I thought it was great. The opening chapter is quite intense emotionally - I'm not sure what I would do walking in and finding my Mom dead in the kitchen, then to find out I have an older brother and a family I never knew about would be quite overwhelming (Including the fact that your brother has been trying to get custody of you for about 2 years).

Characters: 3.5/5
Debra created some really wonderful characters that were easy to love and connect with.

Raielle - Ray is sweet and normal (besides her secret), even with her messed up and unstable past. I like her because she is nice and doesn't have issues or hang ups. Yes, she does keep everyone at a distance and believes she doesn't deserve love and anything good, but she doesn't throw pity parties or tantrums. Ray is strong for a 17 year old girl.

Myles - Myles becomes Ray's first friend when she arrives to live with her brother. I like him - He is sweet, cool and fun.

Lucas - I like Lucas, even though he is the popular guy every girl wants, which in stereotypical circumstances would make him a jerk, but he isn't - he thinks before he speaks and is very observant. He isn't perfect and that makes me adore him even more, plus he has a gentlemanlike manner about him - like when he opens the door for Ray, every single time.

Kyle & Chloe - I accept Kyle but I really don't like Chloe. Kyle really wants to help Ray, and give her a home. I can understand why Chloe is the way she is but I feel she is not understanding, and just caught up in her own problems, and a typical housewife-next-door-gossip. She judges Ray before even giving her a chance, and never accepts her truly, even when Ray proves her wrong on so many levels.

Penelope - is Kyle & Chloe's young daughter. She is just the cutest and sweetest little girl. My heart just aches when she offers to be Ray's sister, and to 'share her mommy' since Ray doesn't have one anymore. She is just one little bundle of sunshine.

Plot, Pace, Writing style: 4/5
The plot has a medium depth - not too in-depth, yet not shallow either. Debra has a writing style which is easy to follow and can draw you into the story easily. The pace is perfect and the story has enough twists to keep your attention.

Cover & Title talk: 3/5
The cover is OK - It is not exactly eye catching but maybe it does fit the blurry world Ray sometimes gets caught in. The title caught me more than the cover. I thought maybe the title indicating a bit more action but could see where it might come from in the story.

Emotions are dangerous. So are expectations.

'You two coming?" Lucas calls to us. He's standing beside the open door of his truck. Myles walks ahead of me and starts to climb in on the passenger side when Lucas holds out an arm to stop him. "You think I'm holding this door open for you?"

I though he was good-looking before, but when he smiles, he's devastating. "You're about as approachable as an iceberg," I inform him, trying not to stare at his perfect features. His grin stays in place. "That's because you've been about as friendly as a Rottweiler."My eyes widen in disbelief. "You're comparing me to a dog?"

I've heard the phrase walking on air before but I've never had the need to apply it to myself before, until today. As I enter the house, I really do feel lighter and happy and anxious all at the same time.

"People abuse power all the time. That doesn't mea. Tbe power itself is evil, just the wielder of it."
