The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz: Part 2 ~ The Dream of the Planet

Hello My Fellow Beings of Light

Thank you for joining me for another Topic of Light. This week we will be covering Part 2 of the Four Agreements. (I had a look through the contents on how to break it down, since its a short quick read - 7 Chapters, I will cover a chapter a week, so that you can get a nice idea of the overall concept of the book)

This is only my personal interpretation. If you enjoy the parts I cover I do encourage you to purchase this book to get a more clear and thorough picture of the Toltec Teachings.

If you need to re-read the first post, click here

'What you are seeing and hearing right now is nothing but a dream'
'The difference is that when the brain is awake, there is a material frame that makes us perceive things in a linear way' ~ The Four Agreements

This is quite a heavy concept to read as is the this whole chapter. I will briefly cover the concepts, if you don't understand what I am trying to convey, please send me a message or read the book for further explanation or discussion.

We are born into a pre-setup society. All the rules, beliefs, laws, religions and cultures are already set up. This can be referred to as Society's dream or the dream of the planet. When we are born, we have the capacity to learn how to dream, and the people in our lives (Parents, friends, teachers) teach us how to be apart of this dream. As a child we crave attention and acceptance, thus we adapt and learn what is 'right' and 'wrong' through repetition. With these beliefs we create our own personal Book of Laws that we use to run our lives, this is our truth.

'By using our attention we learned a whole reality, a whole dream. We learned how to behave in society; what to believe and what not to believe; what is acceptable and what is not acceptable; what is good and what is bad; what is beautiful  and what is ugly; what is right and what is wrong. It was all there already - all that knowledge, all those rules and concepts about how to behave in the world' ~ The Four Agreements

Our lives are run on agreements we have learnt from society. Even when we disagree with these concepts, it is difficult to change paths or directions because it has been repetitively taught to us our whole lives. When we are children, we believe everything we are taught and trust this to be true.

'As soon as we agree, we believe it, and this is called faith. To have faith is to believe unconditionally' ~ The Four Agreements

A favorite saying of mine is: If you always do what you have always done, You will always get, what you have always gotten

We punish and reward ourselves accordingly when we follow or break these rules, based on this whole belief system. Humans are the only species that repeatedly punish ourselves when we have made a mistake.

'With the fear of being punished and that fear of not getting the reward, we start pretending to be what we are not, just to please others, just to be good enough for someone else' ~ The Four Agreements

This part really stuck with me, it touched on our fear of rejection, if we don't abide by the rules and or act the way society believes we should act, we tend to be shunned. So we pretend so we can fit in, yet we are not being true to ourselves and end up feeling angry, frustrated, alone and misunderstood. This fear of rejections gets so ingrained in us that it can lead to the belief of never being good enough.

This is not true, yet we believe it because of society's dream. We need to let go of this belief system and choose the agreements that help us be happy and find peace. This is a difficult step as going against your current Book of Law can make you feel extremely uneasy aka fear.

'Because everything that is in the book of Law has to be true, anything that challenges what you believe is going to make you feel unsafe. Even if the Book of Law is wrong, it makes you feel safe. This is why we need a great deal of courage to challenge our own beliefs.' ~ The Four Agreements

We seek truth and beauty in the world, yet what we don't realise is, that it all around us, we just need to learn to see with the eyes of love, acceptance and peace. We need to remove our belief lenses and see through the fog.

'Trying to be good enough for them, we create an image of perfection, but we don't fit this image of perfection. We create this image, but this image is not real.' ~ The Four agreements

The most important agreements we have, are the ones we make with ourselves. We are in control of these agreements which means we we have the power to change these agreements.

'In these agreements you tell yourself who you are, what you feel, what you believe and, how to behave' ~ The Four Agreements

Do you have the courage to challenge your beliefs and implement new agreements to create a wonderful new life free of limitations?

My wish for you this week is to identify which agreements limit your life and find the courage to let them go.

I know this was a long post, and if you managed to make it to the end with me, I hope you enjoyed it and are ready to continue this journey with mw.

'Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.'  ~Marianne Williamson

Join me next week we will be covering the First of the Four Agreements

  1. "If you always do what you have always done, You will always get, what you have always gotten." -fantastic saying and so true!

    1. Exactly! Its one of my favourtie motivating quotes :)

  2. I still find it difficult, at times, to break free of the rules and laws set up for me as a child. I didn't realise how many had been set up for me until i read this book. Thanks for your comments. kx

    1. This is very true. Until we stop and listen to what goes on in our mind/book of law, we do not even realise what a structured rule driven world we create for ourselves :) I am so happy to hear this book has changed your life as well :)
